Although America still holds fast to the lone wolf ideal in business and life, the truth is teamwork in the workplace spurs businesses to experience efficiency, growth, and innovation.

While children display a great capacity for teamwork, adults are often stinted by insecurities, egos, and poor social skills. This means business leaders must be proactive if they wish to inspire a sense of collaboration and cooperation between employees. Establish a plan for your team.

Before any teambuilding activities, group meetings, strategic planning, or goal setting, determine how you want the team to work together. Develop individual relationships with your employees before engaging them as a group.

Ensure you know the strengths, weaknesses, and individual tics of each person, so you will know how best to motivate them in the future. This knowledge is essential for building strong teams and diffusing conflict.

Clearly outline expectations, goals, and responsibilities to your team members.

Present a healthy model of teamwork to your employees, and provide them with effective tools for interacting with one another. Use applicable teambuilding activities to foster interaction and communication.

Lead by example, and resist the urge to micromanage.

Follow the list of expectations, goals, and responsibilities. Let your employees see the same level of quality and commitment in your work, as you are demanding from them. Unless you need an immediate update, wait for the appropriate time to hear how the projects are going.

Foster creativity and innovation by constructing a safe environment for ideas.

Provide positive feedback, recognize good work, reward success, and listen with an attentive ear. Track the work of both the team and its members to more accurately recognize accomplishments.
